San Marcos in the final days of April tightened drought restrictions in response to decreasing well levels in the Edwards Aquifer, an underground layer of porous, water-bearing rock sitting beneath Hays County. The city determined there was a drought threat when the aquifer's day average index well level fell below feet above mean sea level. In its most recent drought report, the National Weather Service found that the aquifer is nearly 20 feet below the historical average for April.
Central Texas also looks at water elevation at Lake Travis — an aquatic playground for boaters and swimmers but also a critical source of fresh water for Austin and neighboring communities — to gauge the drought threat.
The water elevation for Lake Travis on Sunday had risen about 1. When the river is swollen with contributions from tributaries such as the Llano River — where 3 to 4 inches of rain were recorded — the dams, which form lakes LBJ and Marble Falls, release floodwaters to keep their lakes at a constant level. The forecast for the Austin metro area calls for an overcast start Monday but sunshine for most of the day with a high temperature near 93 degrees.
